3.  Center for Work and Learning
Northeastern University
The mission of the Center for Work and Learning at Northeastern University is to conduct research on "practice-oriented education" (POE), namely, learning that integrates experience in the workplace and community with both liberal arts and professional education. Cooperative education is one prominent example of POE and is a cornerstone of our university's educational model. Still, POE can take many forms and involve learners of any age and in a variety of settings.  It includes service learning, undergraduate research, and interdisciplinary studies at the secondary and post-secondary levels.  It also includes action learning programs, in which teams of employees solve workplace dilemmas and draw out the lessons from their experience.  POE can even be applied to workforce development programs for entry-level, unemployed, or older workers.
